Description: Native of SE Texas. Semi-evergreen to evergreen climbing vine. Glossy green leaves; showy clusters of trumpet-shaped flowers in spring; occasional repeat bloom in summer and fall. Blooms are valuable for pollinators, especially hummingbirds. Clings to surfaces by tendrils with adhesive disks, allowing it to scale trellises, fences, arbors, or masonry without additional support. Highly heat- and drought-tolerant once established; adapts to variety of soils. Blooms primarily on old wood, so prune immediately after main spring display to avoid removing the next year0s buds. Foliage may thin or drop in hard freezes, quickly regrowing in spring. Responds well to pruning after bloom to control size or encourage density. Deer resistant. Excellent for native, low-water landscapes as a showy flowering climber on fences, trellises, walls, or large arbors.
Common Cultivars:
Jekyll: Orange flowers with slightly larger blooms; moderate summer repeat bloom.
Dragon Lady: Deep reddish-orange flowers, dense foliage; lighter, less frequent summer bloom.
Species form: Mix of orange, red, and yellow tones; light and sporadic summer rebloom.
Tangerine Beauty: Abundant orange-red blooms with yellow throats; strongest repeat summer bloom of all cultivars.
