Mature Size: 15-20ft H, 6-10ft W
Light Requirement: Sun
Water Need: Medium
Cold Hardiness: Zone 4 (-30 to -25F) to Zone 9 (20 to 25F)
Description: Cultivar. Deciduous, twining vine. Long, fragrant, lavender-purple flower clusters bloom late spring and can repeat lightly in summer. Attracts pollinators. More cold-hardy and faster to establish than Asian species, with fewer invasive tendencies and a tidier growth habit. Twines counterclockwise and is somewhat less rampant than Chinese wisteria but still needs strong structural support and annual pruning to control size and encourage blooms. Thrives in full sun and blooms more consistently than W. sinensis in years with mild winters. Deer resistant. Excellent for covering sturdy arbors, pergolas, and fences in formal or cottage gardens where a long-season, interest is desired without the extreme invasiveness of Chinese wisteria.
