Description: Adapted. Bold, statuesque prickly pear of central and northern Mexico, named for its thick, nearly circular blue-gray pads that can reach over 12 inches wide. Pads are covered with clusters of stout spines and occasional glochids. In spring, it produces bright yellow flowers, attractive to pollinators, followed by edible purple-red fruit. Performs well in full sun with sharply draining soil and thrives with little water. Extremely heat- and drought-tolerant once established. Requires some protection during prolonged hard freezes. Ideal for large xeriscapes, boundary plantings, or as an architectural specimen in expansive dry gardens.
