Description: Adapted annual or perennial vine, depending on variety. Rapid growth and showy blooms in warm seasons. Both thrive in heat and tolerate poor soils, provided drainage is good. Merremia dissecta (Alamo Vine) Vigorous twining stems and deeply lobed leaves; it can self-seed in ideal conditions. Ipomoea purpurea Grandpa Otts reseeds prolifically if not deadheaded and can become aggressive in moist soils. Both attract pollinators, especially butterflies and hummingbirds, and benefit from consistent moisture in extreme heat for best flowering.

Alamo Vine: Perennial. Cream flowers with purple throat; summer-fall bloom; can reseed. Best bloom in full sun; benefits from light afternoon shade in extreme heat or when grown in containers to protect roots and foliage. Prune in late winter/very early spring before new growth starts. Older foliage deer resistant.                                     Mature Size: 6-15ft H, 3-6ft W.

Grandpa Otts: Annual. Rich purple flowers; magenta star throat. Thrives in full sun with abundant flowering, though light afternoon shade can help reduce heat stress on west-facing walls or in containers. Mature Size: 8-12ft H, 3-6ft W.
