Description: There is a straight species native to east Texas and also a cultivar. Evergreen to semi-evergreen twining vines; glossy green leaves; masses of fragrant flowers in late winter to early spring, often blooming before many other plants in the landscape. Early nectar source for pollinators including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Foliage typically stays green through winter except in severe freezes, when it may thin but quickly regrow in spring. Extremely heat-tolerant, deer-resistant, and pest-free once established. Requires support structure such as a trellis, fence, or arbor. All parts of the plant are toxic if ingested, so avoid planting where pets or livestock may graze. Blooms on old wood; prune immediately after flowering if size control is needed. Deer resistant. Excellent for adding early-season interest to fences, trellises, arbors, or pergolas in native or low-water landscapes.
Common Varieties:
