Known for sculptural ribbed stems, prominent areoles, and large, fragrant white flowers that bloom at night in summer. Require good drainage and some winter protection. Some species (like T. pachanoi) have few spines, while others (like T. peruvianus) are more heavily armed. Best grown in full sun with afternoon shade in extreme heat, especially in containers. Requires deep, infrequent watering during summer and a dry winter rest. Popular in xeric designs, modern gardens, or large pots for their bold, architectural form and occasional dramatic blooms.
