Description: Native and Cultivars. Vigorous, deciduous climbing vines; compound green leaves; showy clusters of 2-3in W, trumpet-shaped flowers in summer, attracting hummingbirds and other pollinators. Climbs via aerial rootlets that cling strongly to masonry, wood, or other structures. Thrives in a variety of soils, is highly heat- and drought-tolerant, and will even handle occasional flooding in riparian zones. Can be aggressive, spreading by root suckers and self-seeding--best planted where its growth can be managed with regular pruning or root barriers. Blooms on new wood, so hard pruning in late winter promotes heavy flowering. Deer resistant. Use for large-scale vertical coverage on fences, walls, pergolas, or arbors, in wildlife gardens, in naturalized plantings where vigorous spread is welcome, or for erosion control on slopes.

Flava: Yellow flowers; slightly less vigorous than species.
                           Mature Size: 20-30ft H, 6-10ft W.

Madame Galen: Larger, salmon-orange blooms; somewhat less rampant growth. Mature Size: 15-25ft H, 6-8ft W.

Species form: Standard orange-red flowers; fastest-growing; most vigorous in Austin conditions. Mature Size: 25-40ft H, 8-12ft W.
