Description: Adapted. Vigorous, twining, woody perennial vine. Semi-evergreen to deciduous depending on winter severity--foliage may persist in mild winters but drops after hard freezes. Produces dense clusters of deep purple, pea-shaped, fragrant flowers in mid- to late summer, well after most spring-blooming vines have finished. Attractive to pollinators. Blooms best in full sun; benefits from partial shade for protection in extreme heat. Drought-tolerant once established, though flowering improves with supplemental irrigation in prolonged dry spells. Twines clockwise, requiring sturdy supports such as pergolas, arbors, or fences. Prune in late winter to control size and encourage new flowering wood; light shaping can also be done after bloom. Moderately deer resistant. Excellent for dense, semi-evergreen year-round screening.
