Botanical Name: Bursera fagaroides
Mature Size: 6-12ft H, 6-10ft W
Light Requirement: Sun
Water Need: Very Low
Cold Hardiness: Zone 9 (20 to 25F) to 11 (above 40F)
Description: Adapted. Shrubby, semi-succulent tree of arid regions of Mexico and the southwestern U.S., grown for its sculptural form, swollen caudex-like trunk, and peeling, papery bark. Aromatic foliage is deciduous in winter or during drought. In late spring to early summer, mature plants produce tiny pale pink to whitish flowers on branch tips--while not showy, they may attract pollinators. Performs best in well-drained soil, protected from prolonged freezes and soggy winter conditions. Can be grown in-ground in warm microclimates or as a container specimen, where its bonsai-like habit can be shaped. Excellent for desert-style gardens, rockeries, or low-maintenance xeric designs.
