Botanical Name: Opuntia erinacea var ursina (sometimes listed as Opuntia turpinii)
Mature Size: 1-2ft H, 3-4ft W
Light Requirement: Sun
Water Need: Very Low
Cold Hardiness: Zone 5 (-20 to -15F) to 11 (above 40F)
Description: Adapted. Compact, low-growing prickly pear known for dense covering of long, white spines that give soft, fuzzy, spruce cone appearance. Grows slowly and forms tidy, spreading mounds over time. Yellow spring flowers, attractive to pollinators, often followed by small red fruit. One of the most cold-hardy Opuntia varieties, it tolerates subzero temperatures only if planted in well-drained soil. Not suited to wet and cold conditions. Despite its soft look, the spines are sharp -- handle with caution. Best suited for rock gardens, alpine-style xeriscapes, or raised beds.
