Description: Adapted. Widely cultivated prickly pear cactus of Mexico and grown globally for its edible pads (nopales) and sweet fruit (tunas). Known for nearly spineless, thick green pads, though occasional glochids may still be present. Large yellow to orange flowers in late spring, followed by oval fruit that ripens red to purple. Large, shrubby form with age and space, thriving in full sun and sharply drained soil. Tolerates drought but benefits from occasional deep watering during peak summer. Fruit attracts pollinators when blooming and birds when ripe. Needs winter protection during prolonged hard freezes. Popular in edible xeriscapes and pollinator-friendly gardens for its dual-purpose beauty and harvestable pads/fruit.
