Description: Native to Texas and well adapted to Central Texas conditions. This unusual prickly pear features long, narrow pads shaped like a cow's tongue, forming wide, mounding clumps over time. Large yellow flowers appear in spring and attract pollinators, followed by red, edible fruit that supports wildlife. Tolerates intense sun, shallow limestone soils, and prolonged drought once established. Spines are sparse to moderate and vary by plant. Performs best in full sun with sharp drainage. Excellent for xeric borders, native habitat gardens, and as a living barrier in Austin-area landscapes.
