Description: Adapted. Tall, shrubby prickly pear cactus of central and northeastern Mexico, Easily recognized by dense white hairs covering its young pads--giving it a distinctive fuzzy appearance. Older pads become smooth and woody as the plant matures. Yellow flowers, attractive to pollinators, in spring followed by red-purple edible fruit. Thrives in full sun with sharply drained soil and minimal water once established. Benefits from some protection during hard freezes. Handle with care -- spines and glochids are present beneath the hairs. Sculptural statement cactus for large xeric landscapes or bold specimen planting.
