Description: Fragrant, shrubby perennial prized for its silver-green foliage and spikes of purple to blue flowers that attract pollinators. Full sun and well-drained, alkaline soil with infrequent deep watering. Prune back after flowering but never cut deeply into old wood. Varieties differ in cold hardiness, bloom time, and appearance. Sometimes grown as a small patio tree.

English (angustifolia): Hidcote, Lady, Superblue, Proven Winner Sweet Romance: Most cold-hardy lavender. Compact scented early summer bloom in early summers. Prefers cooler conditions and afternoon shade during extreme heat.

French (dentata): Goodwin: Larger and more heat-tolerant. Soft, toothed foliage and blooms nearly year-round in warm climates. Not frost-hardy and may need protection or replanting after cold snaps.

Spanish (stoechas): Anouk, Monrovia Javelin Forte, Otto Quast, and Primavera: Showy "rabbit ear" bracts atop dense flower heads. Loves hot, dry conditions and tolerates moderate cold. Unique texture and color to xeric landscapes.

Lavandin (L. x intermedia): Grosso, Phenomenol:  Robust hybrid between English and Portuguese. Tall with long, fragrant flower spikes late in season. Highly aromatic and used for essential oils. Must have good air circulation in Austin's humidity.
