Description: Native to East Texas. Climbing twining vine; clusters of tubular coral-red flowers with yellow throats spring through fall. Flowers attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators, and are followed by small red berries that provide food for birds. Foliage evergreen in mild winters; may thin or partially drop after hard freezes, regrowing in spring. Best flowering in full sun. Drought-tolerant once established; deep watering does encourage more blooms. Partial shade afternoon shade may also encourage more blooms. Prune lightly after main spring bloom to control size and shape; blooms on old and current season's growth, so avoid heavy winter pruning. More restrained and non-invasive compared to Asian honeysuckles. Deer resistant. Excellent for native landscapes as a showy flowering climber on fences, trellises, arbors, or mailboxes.

Blanche Sandman: Cultivar. Bright coral-red flowers with orange interiors.
