Description: Adapted. Fast-growing, columnar cactus of the Andes Mountains of Peru and Ecuador. Stems are ribbed, blue-green, and lightly spined, forming upright columns that branch from the base. Large, fragrant white flowers bloom at night in summer but may be rare in cultivation. Prefers morning sun and some afternoon shade, especially in extreme summer heat or when container-grown. Requires excellent drainage and benefits from dry conditions in winter. Should be protected during hard freezes. Often grown in large pots or raised beds for sculptural form.
