Description: Native to parts of Texas. One of many types of Cholla. Shrubby, tree-like cactus with cylindrical, jointed stems and prominent spines. Produces vivid magenta to purple flowers, attractive to pollinators, in late spring, followed by yellow, ornamental fruit. Extremely cold hardy and drought tolerant, making it ideal for naturalistic or wildlife-friendly landscapes in Austin. Requires full sun and sharply drained soil. Adds height and strong architectural form to xeric plantings. Handle with care 0 spines are long, sharp, and persistent.
