Description: Eleven species of very spiny, shrubby cactus, native to Mexico and parts of the US. The stems are leafless until rain when they are covered with bright green leaves. Red flowers, in tight clusters, at the tip of each branch, appear in spring and then sporadically, as the leaves do, in response to rain.
