Description: Adapted. Largest cactus species in the world, from northwestern Mexico, particularly Baja California Peninsula and Sonora. With age, forms thick, ribbed columns that may branch at the base. Pale green stems with short, widely spaced spines create a stately, tree-like silhouette. White flowers bloom at night in spring and may attract bats or nocturnal pollinators. Edible reddish to purple fruit follows. Requires full sun, excellent drainage, and protection from extended freezes. A dramatic centerpiece for cactus gardens and desert-themed landscapes in frost-protected areas or large containers.
