Description: Adapted. Tall, cylindrical barrel cactus known for dramatic, fiery red to orange spines that glow in sunlight. Forms a columnar shape with age, often reaching impressive heights in well-drained soil. Blooms appear at the crown in summer, typically yellow to reddish and attractive to pollinators. Fruit is yellow. Prefers full sun and excellent drainage. Less cold-tolerant than other Ferocactus species; winter protection is recommended in Austin. Ideal as a container specimen or protected focal point in rock gardens or cactus displays. Mature Size will be closer to 3-4ft H, 1.5-2ft W (in large containers). Avoid watering before freezes; best grown in raised beds or containers where cold, wet soils can be avoided.
