Description: Adapted. Deeply ribbed barrel cactus of the American Southwest and northern Mexico. Sometimes known as Fishhook Barrel due to long, curved central spines, especially when young. Develops heavy, upright form and may lean southwest with age -- earning the nickname Compass Barrel. Summer blooms form a crown of yellow to orange flowers that attract pollinators. Fruit is bright yellow. Full sun and excellent drainage; best in rocky beds, containers, or dry borders. Winter protection may be needed during extended cold or wet periods.
