Description: Adapted. Vigorous, long-lived, deciduous vine. Cascading racemes of highly fragrant lavender-violet flowers in mid-spring before leaves fully emerge. Twines counterclockwise and can climb aggressively, even girdling trees or damaging structures if not trained and pruned regularly. Blooms most reliably in full sun after several years of establishment. Pollinator friendly. Can be invasive in riparian and natural areas; plant only where it can be contained and pruned hard after bloom. Less heat-tolerant than American wisteria but still performs well with adequate moisture. Deer resistant. Best for large, sturdy pergolas, arbors, or fences where weight and spread can be supported and must be controlled.
