Description: Native to most of Texas. Fast-growing deciduous vine; compound leaves turning shades of red, orange, and burgundy in fall. Tendrils tipped with adhesive pads, attach securely to walls, fences, trellises, and trees without additional support. Inconspicuous greenish spring flowers attract small native bees; small blue-black berries in late summer attract birds. Varied soils and exposures; tolerant of urban conditions, drought, and poor soils once established. Foliage drops in late fall, revealing branching structure in winter. Aggressive if not maintained; prune heavily late winter/early spring before new growth begins and more lightly during the season to control growth. In riparian areas can spread rapidly and overtop native vegetation so keep in managed landscapes away from natural waterways. Avoid planting directly against wood siding; as it can trap moisture. Excellent for fast coverage of masonry walls, fences, or large arbors, for erosion control on slopes, or as bold seasonal accent with brilliant fall foliage in low-water landscapes.
