copallinum: Deciduous, small scrubby tree, native to parts of the US including Texas. Can be single form or in colonies. Prefers neutral to alkaline soil and is very heat and drought tolerant once established. Brilliant red fall color. Yellow green flowers on female plants produce brownish fruit.

aromatica: Texas native. Thicket forming, deciduous shrub, often grown for fall color. Leaves have spicy scent if bruised. Insignificant flowers are yellowish-green. Best shape and color will be in full sun but plant is useful for erosion control in shady areas. Fuzzy red fruit is valued by wildlife.
