Description: Native to Lower Rio Grande Valley. Most imposing Sabal palm; stout trunk; dense crown of large, fan-shaped fronds. Spring cream-colored blooms are followed by black fruits eaten by wildlife. Predominantly wind pollinated. Slow but steady growth. More cold-hardy than Florida and with a broader crown; thicker trunk. Once established, usually survives on natural rainfall, although growth will be slower. Deer resistant. Best used as specimen, in formal groupings, or paired with succulents and native grasses where rugged trunk and full crown can anchor designs.
