Description: Adapted. One of hardiest palms in cultivation, often called porcupine palm for sharp, needle-like spines at base of fronds. Shrubby and slow-growing; dense clumps of dark green, fan-shaped fronds. Summer creamy flowers are wind-pollinated, followed by small black fruits popular with birds. Prefers am sun and afternoon shade; will tolerate deep shade. Very tolerant of clay or rocky soils if well-drained, and one of the few palms suitable for deep shade. Drought tolerance once established. Highly deer resistant. Low maintenance. Use in mass plantings, as privacy hedging, or as an accent.
