Description: Adapted. Hardy fan palm. Stout trunk; large, fan-shaped fronds. Thick, gray trunk with persistent leaf bases forming skirt; compact crown of stiff, fan-shaped fronds. Spring creamy-white flowers, followed by small black fruits. Wind pollinated. Handles rocky alkaline soil. Tolerant of drought but maintains stronger growth and greener foliage with supplemental irrigation during long, hot summers. More cold-hardy than Mexican Fan Palm. Withstands brief dips into the low teens, though severe winters may burn fronds. Additionally trunk is shorter, thicker and crown is denser; better overall long-term reliability. Good salt tolerance, common in coastal landscapes. Deer resistant. Use as durable specimen palm or paired in formal rows.
