Botanical Name: Opuntia santa-rita
Mature Size: 3-5ft H, 4-8ft W
Light Requirement: Sun
Water Need: Very Low
Cold Hardiness: Zone 7 (0 to 5F) to 11 (above 40F)
Description: Adapted. One of the most ornamental prickly pears, valued for vivid purple pads, which deepen in color with cold weather, drought, or stress. Bright yellow flowers in spring, attractive to pollinators, often followed by reddish-purple fruit. Young pads are typically low-spine or spineless, while older pads may develop glochids or occasional spines. Cultivar 'Tubac' is a more compact, upright selection with slightly fewer spines and more consistent purple coloring, especially in winter. Both forms require full sun, excellent drainage, and minimal water. Excellent for desert-style gardens, xeric borders, and modern landscapes seeking year-round color and bold form.
