Description: Adapted. Rich purple pads, which deepen in color with cold, drought, or intense sun. Large yellow flowers with red centers in spring,attractive to pollinators, followed by small reddish-purple fruit; edible but seedy. Long, dark central spines contrast against colorful pads. Requires full sun, excellent drainage, and minimal water. Handle with care -- spines are long and sharp. Best used in xeriscapes, raised beds, or cactus gardens where its bold color and form can shine.
