Botanical Name: Ardisia japonica
Mature Size: 8-12in H, 12-24in W
Light Requirement: Partial Shade to Shade
Water Need: Low to Medium
Cold Hardiness: Zone 7 (5 to 10F) to 9 (25 to 30F)
Description: Adapted. Evergreen groundcover. Dense mat glossy green foliage; maintains year-round coverage in shade. Small white to pink star-shaped flowers in summer followed by clusters of bright red berries persisting into winter. Spreads gradually by underground rhizomes. Prefers moist, well-drained soil but will tolerate some dryness once established. More cold-hardy than many subtropical groundcovers but should be protected in severe freezes. Generally, deer resistant, though tender new growth may occasionally be sampled. Best suited for protected beds, shaded courtyards, or as underplanting beneath trees where refined, low-maintenance evergreen cover is desired.
