Botanical Name: Lonicera japonica purpurea
Mature Size: 15-30ft H, 4-8ft W, Invasive Potential in Texas
Light Requirement: Sun
Water Need: Medium
Cold Hardiness: Zone 4 (-30 to -25F) to 9 (25 to 30F)
Description: Adapted. Semi-evergreen to evergreen twining vine; purple-tinged foliage; fragrant tubular flowers opening white aging to deep yellow, blooming late spring into summer. Attracts hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators. Best bloom in full sun. Retains most foliage in mild winters and recovers quickly after freezes. While less rampant than standard Lonicera japonica, it still has invasive potential in Texas, particularly in riparian and naturalized areas, due to spreading by seed and rooting stems. Blooms on new growth, so prune in late winter or very early spring to encourage maximum flowering. Requires support from trellises, arbors, or fences.
