Light Requirement: Sun
Water Need: Low
Cold Hardiness: Zone 7 (0 to 10F) to 10 (30 to 35F)
Description: Semi-evergreen grass forming a large green clump with graceful arching foliage. Tall, feathery pink plumes rise above the foliage in late summer and often persist into winter, providing strong seasonal interest. Plumes are often used as interior decoration. Poor soil (if it is well drained) heat, deer, and drought are no problem, once established. Requires space and can be used as a screen or accent plant in xeric landscapes. Cut back in late winter to maintain its form and promote fresh growth. Use caution when handling, as the leaf edges can be sharp. Avoid planting next to buildings as it is a potential fire hazard.
Varieties:
Cortaderia selloana 'Pink Flamingo' - Pale pink plumes that fade to cream, late-season bloom
Cortaderia selloana 'Rosea' - Light rose-colored plumes with a soft, airy texture
Cortaderia selloana 'Pink Feather' - Showy pink blooms, slightly smaller stature than standard forms
