Description: A deciduous, fast-growing, and vigorous vine native to southern China and somewhat adapted to Austin. Produces large, fuzzy, brown-skinned fruits with bright green flesh and a sweet-tart flavor. Requires a long frost-free growing season and protection from late spring frosts. Grows best with strong support and in rich, well-draining soil. Consistent moisture, especially in summer. For best fruiting choose early ripening varieties Plant one male for every 6-8 female plants.

Hayward: Most common commercial variety, large fruit, ripens late. Needs a male pollinator. Best in warm, protected sites.

Vincent: Female variety, early-ripening, slightly more cold-tolerant than Hayward. Needs a male pollinator.
Tomuri (Male): Standard male pollinator for Hayward; vigorous and reliable.


Chico (Hardy Hybrid): Slightly smaller fruit, ripens earlier than Hayward, better suited to areas with shorter seasons. Needs a male pollinator.
