Description: There are 3 main types of blackberry plants available to the home grower. Usually, the thornless varieties are carried because they are easier to work with, however thorned varieties often produce better. Upright growers that require between 300 and 800 winter "chill" hours. To encourage good fruit, pruning will be necessary as is a high nitrogen fertilizer as new leaves appear in spring and again after fruiting. Plants also require sufficient water to produce fruit. Protect from hot late afternoon sun will benefit the plant.
