Description: Striking, drought-tolerant euphorbias with bold, sculptural form and minimal water needs. These warm-season succulents thrive in full sun and sharply drained soil. Growth habits range from low, sprawling forms to upright candelabra-like columns. Foliage is often minimal, with photosynthetic stems in colors from green to fiery red or silver-blue. Generally deer resistant. Most varieties are not cold-hardy in prolonged freezes and should be protected or grown in containers. All parts contain a caustic milky sap0handle with care and avoid skin contact. Excellent for modern, xeric, or desert-style landscapes and containers.
Common Varieties:
Candelilla: Native to West Texas and northern Mexico; upright, blue-green waxy stems form dense clumps. Used ornamentally and for beeswax-like extract.
Donkey Tail Spurge: Adapted. Trailing habit with spiraled blue-gray leaves and chartreuse bracts in spring. Excellent for rock walls or dry slopes; reseeds readily.
Gopher Plant: Adapted. Compact, shrubby euphorbia with gray-green stems and seasonal yellow-green bracts.
Moroccan Mound: Adapted. Mounding, clump-forming cactus-like euphorbia with angled, blue-green stems and minimal spines. Great for rock gardens and containers.
Pencil Cactus: Adapted. The classic green form of Sticks on Fire, with slender, upright, leafless stems. Grows large in frost-free zones; protect from hard freeze.
Sticks on Fire: Dramatic, branching stems shift from green to red-orange in full sun; ideal for containers or protected spots.
