Description: Adapted. Terrestrial bromeliads with stiff, spiny, rosette-forming foliage in shades of green, silver, or deep purple. Spikes of orange to yellow tubular flowers attract pollinators such as hummingbirds and native bees. Heat- and drought-tolerant once established. Full sun but tolerate partial shade, especially in extreme summer heat. Deer resistant. Considered low-water plants, they do benefit from moderate watering during their active growing and blooming season in spring and early summer. Sharp leaf edges require careful placement away from foot traffic. Ideal for rock gardens, xeriscapes, and containers.
Common Varieties:
Burgundy Ice: Deep burgundy-purple foliage with silver edging; bold color contrast in full sun; striking in rock gardens and pots.
Grape: Compact rosette with rich, dusty purple tones; silver spines; thrives in containers or sunny beds.
Silver Nickel: Silvery-gray foliage with dense, spiny texture; excellent contrast plant; tolerates intense heat and sun.
Starfish: Wide, slightly recurved silver-gray leaves form a symmetrical, star-like rosette; architectural focal point.
