Description: Deciduous shrubs valued for their multi-season interest--spring flowers, summer foliage, vibrant fall color, and clusters of dark, antioxidant-rich berries. Native to the eastern U.S Black Chokeberry and Red Chokeberry adapt well to Central Texas with some care. They thrive best with morning sun and afternoon shade or filtered light to reduce stress from extreme summer heat. They tolerate clay soils and seasonal wetness, making them suitable for rain gardens or naturalistic landscapes. Birds enjoy the berries, though the fruit is astringent fresh and better suited for jams or juices. The two types will cross pollinate, enhancing fruit production.

Common Varieties:

Black -Viking: Vigorous cultivar with larger fruit and good fall color; often used for edible landscaping.

Black - Autumn Magic: Compact form with dense foliage and intense red-purple fall color.

Red - Brilliantissima: Upright red chokeberry with glossy leaves and bright red fruit; excellent ornamental variety.
