Description: Adapted. From arid regions of Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay, named for long, rigid, white spines that resemble toothpicks. Stout, blue-green columnar stems are heavily ribbed and can eventually form a tall, branching specimen. Performs best in full sun with excellent drainage and is often grown in large containers or protected beds to ensure winter survival. Large white to pale pink flowers, attractive to pollinators, at night in summer, followed by small fruits. Drought-tolerant. Should be protected during hard freezes. Strikingly architectural and well-suited to modern xeric gardens or desert-themed landscapes.
