Description: Adapted. From the Sonoran Desert of southern Arizona and northwestern Mexico, Forms upright, clustered columns with gray-green stems and distinctive tufts of bristle-like spines on mature segments. Produces small, pinkish flowers near the top of older stems--many of which open at night and attract pollinators. Performs best in full sun, though young or container-grown plants benefit from afternoon shade in extreme heat. Requires excellent drainage and dry winters. Suitable for architectural accents in xeric gardens or as a specimen in cactus collections.
