Description: Adapted. Slow-growing columnar cactus of Mexico. Long, white, hair-like spines resemble an old man0s beard. These hairs protect it from sun and temperature extremes. Should be grown in large containers due to climate and cold sensitivity. Needs full sun for best form but benefits from afternoon shade when young or container-grown, as intense heat can damage the hair. Requires excellent drainage and a dry winter. Not frost-tolerant 0 should be brought indoors or protected during freezes. Rarely blooms in cultivation, but mature plants can produce tubular red-pink flowers from a woolly flowering zone. A sculptural favorite in cactus collections or raised display pots. Frequently grown as a houseplant.
