Description: Adapted. Towering columnar cactus of central Mexico. Typically grows as single, deep green unbranched column and is known for many ribs and small spines. Best in protected microclimates or large containers where it can be moved or covered during hard freezes. Full sun for best form, but afternoon shade beneficial during extreme summer heat, especially in containers. Requires excellent drainage and extremely dry winter conditions. Uncommon for it to flower in cultivation, but mature plants may produce small, funnel-shaped flowers followed by small fruit. Best used as a vertical accent or collector specimen in raised beds, xeric designs, or large mobile containers.
