Description: Native to Western Texas. Compact, clumping cactus, named for spiny, cylindrical stems that resemble a hedgehogs back. Grows in low mounds with upright stems covered in dense spines that range from gray to reddish-brown. Produces brilliant magenta to purple, funnel-shaped flowers in spring highly attractive to pollinators. Bright red to pinkish red edible fruit follows. Prefers full sun, sharply draining soil, and minimal water once established. Cold hardy and tolerant of heat and drought. Well-suited for rock gardens, native xeric beds, and habitat plantings.
