Description: Adapted. Large, robust barrel cactus of northeastern Mexico, known for dramatic size and striking reddish spines. Heavily ribbed upright cylindrical body, eventually develops a slight lean or curve with age. Yellow to orange blooms appear near the crown in late spring to early summer, attracting pollinators. Grows best in full sun with excellent drainage and minimal supplemental water. Slow-growing. Must be protected during hard freezes or grown in containers that can be overwintered. Bold architectural feature in xeric gardens or cactus groupings.
