Botanical Name: Echinocactus texensis
Mature Size: 8-12in H, 12-18in W
Light Requirement: Sun
Water Need: Very Low
Cold Hardiness: Zone 6 (-5 to 0F) to 11 (above 40F)
Description: Native of Central and West Texas. Low, heavily armored cactus gets name from stout, rigid spines and habit of growing nearly flush with the ground -- posing a hidden hazard to hooves. Thrives in full sun, dry conditions, and rocky or gravelly soils. Large, pale pink to red flowers in late spring, followed by reddish fruit. Extremely cold hardy and drought tolerant. Requires minimal water and excellent drainage. A rugged, compact accent for rock gardens, dry slopes, or native-style plantings. Ideal for exposed xeric landscapes.
