Description: Cultivar/adapted. Low-growing barrel cactus with wide, hooked central spines that range from pink to purple, giving it the occasional nickname Fishhook Barrel. True common name is Devils Tongue Barrel. Rounded body with strong ribbing and purplish to lavender fall blooms that attract pollinators. Fruit is yellow to greenish yellow. Requires excellent drainage and protection from prolonged cold or wet conditions. Benefits from afternoon shade in extreme heat. Best in containers, rock gardens, or cactus groupings where its dramatic spines provide bold contrast.
