Description: A rare cactus. Round when young and barrel shaped as it gets older. Reddish yellow or reddish-purple spines in groups of 12 to 20. Of these the upper 4 give the plant its name because the upper 3 are straight and the last one is heavier and hooked downward. Flowers, blooming June to November, are red, gold, and orange and are followed by yellow fruits attractive to birds and small mammals.
