Botanical Name: Carnegiea gigantea
Mature Size: 15-30ft H, 4-5ft W
Light Requirement: Sun
Water Need: Very Low
Cold Hardiness: Zone 9 (25 to 30F) to 11 (above 40F)
Description: Adapted. Extremely slow-growing; may take a decade to reach a few feet tall. Tall, columnar form with pleated ribs and sparse branching at maturity. White, night-blooming flowers appear in late spring, attract pollinators, and are followed by red fruit. Not well-suited to prolonged freezes or wet winters, making it marginal for Austin without protection. Best grown in large containers or microclimates with excellent drainage and winter cover. Performs well in heat and reflected light if soil remains dry.
