Description: Adapted. Vigorous, semi-evergreen; twining stems, hand-shaped leaves. Foliage often persists through mild winters but will drop back in hard freezes, regrowing quickly in spring. Early spring blooms; spicy vanilla fragrance, color varying by cultivar: the species purple to reddish-brown flowers, Alba clean white blooms, Silver Bells pale lavender-pink flowers with lighter foliage, and Rosea soft pink blooms with more delicate scent. Flowers attract pollinators, and edible pods may form if multiple cultivars are planted for cross-pollination. Best in well-drained soil with sturdy trellis/fence. Benefits from morning sun and afternoon shade to reduce summer stress, and regular deep watering in drought. Best for screening, softening structures, or adding seasonal fragrance on trellises, fences, or arbors.
