Description: Adapted. Low-growing, evergreen to semi-evergreen groundcover forming dense mats of foliage. Attractive, often colorful leaves (green, bronze, burgundy, or variegated) and striking spikes of blue to violet flowers in spring. Blooms attract pollinators. Thrives in shaded areas where grass struggles, although foliage will be more sparse. Spreads by surface runners; can naturalize quickly in favorable conditions. Deer resistant. Tolerates a range of soils if well-drained. Not tolerant of strong afternoon sun. Good for underplanting trees, shaded borders, or erosion control on slopes.
Common Varieties:
Black Scallop: Glossy, dark purple-black leaves with intense color contrast.
Bronze Beauty: Shiny bronze-green foliage with blue flowers; reliable spreader.
Burgundy Glow: Tricolor foliage of cream, pink, and burgundy; compact habit.
Catlin's Giant: Larger foliage and flower spikes; bold texture, good for impact.
Chocolate Chip: Small, narrow leaves; deep chocolate-purple tones; very dense mat.
Princess Nadia: Compact, cream-pink-green variegated foliage; vivid spring flowers; slower spreading.
